Circa 2005.
Manuscript copy of Mickey Spillane's last novel, "The Last Stand." Lengthily inscribed by Spillane to his friend Joe Gill on the title page, and the inscription says it all: "To Joe Gill (Gilliam) / (I made you Irish!) / This, with you as the hero, is thanks for helping retype "I, The Jury" in those good old days! / Your buddy / Mickey Spillane / This plane [in reference to a photo at the top of the title page] is a BT13A--I took you up in a BT 6. M. / P.S. The BT is what I used in the war! M." Max Allan Collins wrote about this novel, "When he died, Spillane had just finished a novel called 'The Last Stand,' which is not a crime novel, more an adventure novel in the 'Something’s Down There' vein." Robert Ardai, president of the publisher Hard Case Crime, publisher of Spillane's posthumous work, adds: "'The Last Stand' is 'about a pilot whose plane stalls while he’s flying over a patch of desert out west; he’s forced to land near an Indian reservation, where he becomes embroiled in a hunt for two types of treasure, one that’s being sought by a ruthless criminal and one that’s being sought by government operatives.'
