[Reed, Lou] Rock, Mick
Photograph of Lou Reed from "Transformer"
|
|
N.p. Mick Rock, n.d. Double weight silver gelatin photograph of Lou Reed, one of 50 (this being No. 36) SIGNED by both Lou Reed and Mick Rock and struck by Mick Rock from the original negative.
The photograph of Reed famously used on the cover of his “Transformer” album. Mick Rock began been working with David Bowie in the late 1960s, and Bowie introduced him to Iggy Pop and then Lou Reed, both of whom Rock would photograph throughout the 1970s. The “Transformer” photo was taken at a live show in London, in July 1972. Reed was wearing white kabuki-style make-up that had started to run, and Rock snapped a photo at what would become a seminal moment--though an element of chance dictated the final image.
Rock notes, “Lou had helped me select from the original contact sheet and he had clocked that frame early on. In those days I used to do my own black and white prints. I had one print where it had fallen out of focus in the enlarger. I hadn't noticed until it got into the developer. I liked it, even though it was technically a mistake, so I brought it along with the other stuff, and when he saw it he was again very decisive.”
16 x 20 inches. Fine. [Book #108549]
