Whistle Stop

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1946. Original pressbook for the 1946 film, "Whistle Stop," directed by Leonide Moguy, based on the 1941 novel by Maritta M. Wolf. Written for the screen by Philip Yordan, and starring George Raft, Ava Gardner, Victor McLaglen, and Tom Conway. Returning to her small town after a successful stay in a big city, Mary (Ava Gardner) ignites jelaousy and violence between former lover Kenny (George Raft) and nightclub owner Lew (Tom Conway). 18 pages, saddle stitched, 11 x 17 inches. Very Good plus condition. Tiny chip at the upper corner of the front wrapper. Faint horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages, with a tiny closed tear at the rear wrapper and last few pages at the crease. White wrappers lightly soiled overall. After being ill-served as a contract player for MGM, "Whistle Stop" was an early starring role for Gardner, whose next film, "The Killers," would rocket her to stardom. Hannsberry, "Femme Noir," p. 167. Selby (1984), 473. [Book #110896]
