The Little Princess

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1939. Final script for the 1939 film (here under the slightly different working title, "A Little Princes"), based on three sources: the 1888 novel "Sara Crewe" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the 1903 stage adaptation by Burnett of same, retitled, "A Little Princess," and a revised version of the novel that included added scenes from the play, titled "A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe," published in 1905.

Without question Shirley Temple's most timeless performance, complete with all the standard story elements Hollywood had worked to establish up to that point: orphaned at a young age (or is she?), an environment where the protagonist can become a hero (fancy girl's school), nasty female antagonist (headmistress Mary Nash), mystical seer (Cesar Romero), and last-minute, unexpected assistance from unlikely sources (Queen Victoria). Priceless from start to finish.

Orange studio wrappers, stamped REVISED SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper and dated September 20, 1938. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Ferris and Hill. 141 leaves, with an additional 25 pages of retakes and added scenes. Mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/12/38 and 12/1/38. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.
