Lady on a Train

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1944. First Draft script for the 1945 film. Leslie Charteris wrote the original screen story (but not the screenplay) for this film, and subsequently published the story as a novel in conjunction with the film's release. An early draft script, partial but complete as issued, by noted novelist and screenwriter Roy Chanslor, whose contribution to the film remains unrecorded in the AFI catalog and IMDB.

A light mystery with a terrific Woolrich-esque story in which a young girl sees a man being murdered from her train car window. Known for her addiction to mystery novels, she is not taken seriously by the police, and begins her own investigation.

Fragile early brown Universal studio wrappers, noted as First Draft Screenplay, credited to screenwriter Chanslor, and dated May 18, 1944. Title page present, with matching credits and date from the front wrapper. 105 leaves, mimeograph, white stock, with yellow revision pages throughout, dated variously between 6/10/44 and 6/14/44 (change dates only noted on a few leaves). Pages Near Fine, wrapper quite fragile but still in Near Fine condition (now encapsulated in Mylar), bound with three gold brads.
