Complete Poems and Prose of Walt Whitman, 1855-1888 [Leaves of Grass]
|
|
Philadelphia: Ferguson Brothers, 1888. Small quarto. First printing of this edition. First issue, binding A, with no statement of limitation. Whitman's second attempt at collecting his poetry and prose, and the seventh edition (13th printing) of "Leaves of Grass." SIGNED by Whitman on the title page of "Leaves of Grass," and again on a tipped-in autographed note at the front pastedown, in blue crayon, to the Ferguson Brothers of Philadelphia, the printers of this volume.
Tipped on to the two front flyleaves is an autographed note signed by Horace Traubel (dated 1908) to the collector William Gable, in Gable's home town of Altoona. Traubel was Whitman's friend, protector, and literary executor, and here describes the poet and refers to biographer John Addington Symonds' pronouncement of this volume as "Whitman's Bible."
An important title in the Whitman bibliography, collecting "Leaves of Grass," "Specimen Days and Collect," and "November Boughs," with a "Note at the Beginning" included for this edition.
Publisher's half bound marbled boards backed in dark green cloth, paper spine label, leaves uncut. Front hinge professionally reinforced and light shelfwear, else Near Fine. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box.
