London: Richard Bentley, 1840. Octavos. Three volumes. First Edition. First UK Edition, preceding the American edition published the same year. Publisher's quarter-cloth tan paper boards backed in purple, with paper spine labels. Very Good or better condition, with no dust jackets as issued. Each volume with a contemporary owner name (dated 1842) at the front pastedown, extremities moderately rubbed, brief fraying at the corners, spine labels with some loss but mostly legible, spines faded and slightly leaning, and faint foxing throughout. Brief dampstain to the rear board of volume two, and moderate dampstaining to the front board of volume three where the cloth meets the paper. An important title in the Cooper canon, the fourth novel featuring Natty Bumppo, hero of the "Leatherstocking Tales" series. Uncommon in an unrestored original binding. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. [Book #121597]
