The Cardinal's Mistress

London: Cassell, 1929. First UK Edition, and first edition in English or in book form. Very Good plus in a Very Good plus example of the rare dust jacket. Jacket is bright, with rubbing, tiny chips, and shallow creasing at the extremities.

A potboiler romance written by Mussolini in 1909, early in his political career, prior to his becoming the 40th Prime Minister of Italy and the most popular figure associated with the creation of Fascism. Translator Hiram Motherwell explains in her introduction that Mussolini wrote the story in serial form for the weekly entertainment supplement to the Italian Socialist publication "Il Popolo," "La Vita Trentina." He was at the time of its publication the Secretary to the Socialist Chamber of Labour. The first jacketed example we have ever seen, and lacking the library markings normally found.
