Deighton, Len
Billion Dollar Brain

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First Edition. Laid in are two scarce pieces of ephemera issued as promotional items for this title: (1) a facsimile of a Deighton notebook, and (2) a facsimile of a typed letter signed from Deighton describing the notebook.
Edward Milward-Oliver notes in "Len Deighton: An Annotated Bibliography 1954-1985, "A replica of one of Deighton's small tan coloured notebooks containing--in addition to notes and drawings related to the novel--facsimiles of an Aeroflot baggage ticket, a ticket to Verdi's 'Otello' at Leningrad's Maly Opera House, and a Finnish ferry ticket. [These pieces were] produced by Jonathan Cape as an advance promotional item and not issued with the book (so convincing was the notebook that some bookshop owners returned their copy to the publisher, with a note of thanks to Deighton for lending it to them)." Fine in a Near Fine example of the fragile foil dust jacket.
Basis for the third of a trilogy of British films based on Deighton's "nameless spy" novels starring Michael Caine, this entry directed by a young Ken Russell. A former British spy stumbles onto a plot to overthrow Communism with the help of a supercomputer. An exceptional copy, and the only time we have encountered these ephemeral items. [Book #124673]
