The Comic History of England

London: Punch / Bradbury and Evans, 1847, 1848. First bound edition, originally published in twenty parts, nineteen volumes. Octavo, two volumes. Contemporary full tan calf, gilt triple rule on the boards and double on the board edges, six spine compartments: one red with gilt titles, one brown with gilt titles, four with gilt floral tooling and rule, five raised bands, gilt page edges, and navy endpapers.

An excellent example of early caricature and social and political satire, a punchy collaboration by A'Beckett and Leech, both working at Punch at the time. With ten coloured etchings and one hundred twenty woodcuts in each volume (all present), the colors still as vibrant and caricatures amplified as ever.

A touch of shelfwear, else Near Fine.

A lovely pair.
