Twelve years after arriving in Henning, Tennessee, "Chicken" George Moore, former cockfighting champion, is getting old and soon moves in with his son Tom, who has a family of his own including two daughters, Elizabeth and Cynthia. Tom is a leader of the black community in Henning and has a working relationship with former Confederate Army officer Colonel Frederick Warner. Warner's son soon falls in love with a black woman named Carrie, who Tom has hired to as a teacher. Warner wants Tom to fire Carrie but he refuses. Carrie and Jim wed in Memphis and Warner takes Jim out of his will.
