Eight soldiers are hanged for staging a mutiny and one of Simon's fellow black soliders is beaten nearly to death by a state trooper. Soon, the whole platoon is sent overseas to fight in the first World War in France. While there, Simon learns his father died on the operating table. They all make plans while in the trenches and soon return home, hoping to reap some much deserved respect from white counterparts. The exact opposite comes true as white people seek to reestablish their authority. the episode ends with Simon deciding to relocate to Ithaca, NY to continue his studies at Cornell.
