Intimacy (The Halfway Diner)

John Sayles (screenwriter)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1986. Revised First Draft script for an unproduced film. Based on the 2004 short story "The Halfway Diner" by John Sayles.

Award winning actor, screenwriter, and director John Sayles, whose films often emphasize character development and psychological exploration, adapted his short story "The Halfway Diner" for the screen in this unproduced screenplay. On weekly bus trips to visit their incarcerated husbands, a group of women develop a strong cross-cultural community. The women spend more time together on the lengthy rout than with their husbands in the meager visitation hours, and despite differences, they begin to lean on one another for support and friendship. Sayles was awarded the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant in 1983.
