Based on the 1974 novel by Robert Stone, winner of the National Book Award. John (Moriarty), a journalist, turns to heroin smuggling in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Acting as John's go-between is the equally burnt-out Ray (Nolte), who delivers the narcotics to the journalist's wife, Marge (Weld). Ray and Marge are eventually on the run from crooked narcotics agents.

Shot on location in California and Mexico. Nominated for a Palme d'Or award at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival.

Gray titled wrappers. Title page present, undated, with credits for screenwriter Rascoe and novelist Stone. 126 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 125. Photographically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.
