Based on the 1974 novel by Robert Stone, winner of the National Book Award. John (Moriarty), a journalist, turns to heroin smuggling in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Acting as John's go-between is the equally burnt-out Ray (Nolte), who delivers the narcotics to the journalist's wife, Marge (Weld). Ray and Marge are eventually on the run from crooked narcotics agents.
Shot on location in California and Mexico. Nominated for a Palme d'Or award at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival.
