Burbank, CA: Buena Vista Pictures, 1998. An archive of four scripts for the 1999 film, including a shooting script and three sets of colored revisions, with the studio's production number rubber stamped randomly on the pages throughout. Copy belonging to Bruce Willis' stand-in, Allen Strange, with a detailed (and nicely anecdotal) typed letter signed providing provenance.
The provenance letter is as illuminating as the script itself. M. Night Shyamalan's debut was initially budgeted at $10 million, but after Bruce Willis signed on, Disney expanded the budget to three times that amount. Willis was originally dismissive of Shyamalan, but his attitude began to change as filming progressed, and as Haley Joel Osment began to steal scene after scene. The resulting film was one of the biggest successes of Willis' career, and propelled Shyamalan into the ranks of A-list directors.
