New York: Simon and Schuster, 1968. Third printing. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in the year after publication: "For Sissi Brandon / with warmest regards / Charles Portis / March 18, 1969."
We have handled a number of signed and inscribed titles by Portis over time, but this is only the second copy we have seen dated prior to the 1980s, making this a significant example. The film rights to Portis' book were sold in a rather heated bidding war after its 1968 serial publication in the Saturday Evening Post. This was followed by the book publication in the fall, then by the shooting of the film between September and December in Colorado, where the reclusive Portis was on location.
The author's second novel, basis for the now-classic film starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby, and the equally classic remake--far more faithful to the text--by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.
Very Good or better in a like dust jacket. Slight lean, some rubbing to the cloth. Jacket shows some shallow creasing, with chipping and short closed tears at the spine corners.
