Based on Henryk Sienkiewicz's 1895 novel, about the love between a young Christian woman named Lygia (Kerr), and Marcus Vinicius (Taylor), a Roman patrician, circa 64 A.D. Nominated for several Academy Awards. Elizabeth Taylor was set to play Lygia, until production changed hands, and instead she makes a cameo as a prisoner. Sophia Loren also makes a cameo, her first American film credit.

Set in Rome, shot on location in Italy.
