Based on Jan de Hartog's two-person stage play, opened on Broadway in October, 1951, starring Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. John Edwards (Harrison) recounts the history of his marriage to his wife Abby (Palmer), telling the story from a four-poster bed. The story begins with their wedding in 1897 and follows to the death of the wife in the 1930s, will all scenes acted out in the couple's boudoir, near the bed they'd received as a wedding present. The film also includes transitional animation sequences produced by the UPA cartoon studios.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Cinematography.
