Based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel. Millionaire Jervis Pendleton III (Astaire) is the unknown benefactor of French orphan girl Julie (Caron), financing the girl's education. Moved by Julie's letters of thanks, Pendleton's secretary Alicia (Ritter) advises him to go to France to visit the orphan. When he arrives, he finds that Julie is almost a grown woman, and the two fall in love.

Set in France, shot on location in New York.

Nominated for 3 Academy Awards.
