Akiva (Piccoli) is a Soviet Jew chess master ensconced in Communism, and in declining health. His rival, Pavius (Arbatt) is a young defector tired of Communist ways, and the two face each other at the World Chess Championship.

Shot on location in France. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
