Based on the real Molly Maguires, a secret society active in Ireland in the late 1800s. James (Harris) is an Irish immigrant hired to infiltrate Irish immigrant miners, led by Jack (Connery). Jack and his gang intend to revolt against their oppressive management, using murder and destruction, but will James join in the cause or betray his fellow Irishman for the good of the State?

Shot in Eckley, Pennsylvania. Director Ritt, though not named by the HUAC, was eventually blacklisted by the television industry. Nominated for an Academy Award.
