Ray (1911-1979) was an American director, known for his film "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), whose talents ran as deep as his habits of drugs and alcohol abuse. His status as a "cult" director has grown since his short time with James Dean, and his work in experimental film, like "We Can't Go Home Again" (1976), and his trademark use of color, has influenced filmmakers from French New Wave to New Hollywood. Ray and Utey were married in 1958 and divorced in 1964.
