The drama that elicited an irritated response from president Ronald Reagan, who claimed it was "a blatant propaganda message against our agricultural programs." Gilbert Ivy (Sam Shepard) and his wife Jewell (Jessica Lange) desperately try to weather the disaster that besets their family farm. Lange was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her part in the film.

Set in Iowa, shot on location in Iowa and California.
