Robert De Niro stars as David Merrill, a left leaning director who returns from a vacation to find Hollywood in the full swing of McCarthyism. He is asked to either implicate colleagues with supposed Communist sympathies or sacrifice his own career. The film garnered some controversy, having spurred a fight between director Irwin Winkler and former blacklisted writer Abraham Polonsky surrounding the political orientation of the De Niro character.
