An adventure quest in the vein of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." To the surprise of the studio, the film faired quite well and is considered among the best films released in 1984. The script was written by an unknown Malibu waitress, Diane Thomas. Thomas was killed in a car wreck proceeding the film, leaving "Romancing the Stone" as her only screenplay.

Set in Colombia, shot on location in Mexico, New York, and Utah.
