The film was conceived during a markedly more conventional phase in director Jean-Luc Godard's career and released the same year as his highly controversial picture, "Je Vous Salue, Marie." Set in a hotel in Paris, the plot follows a trio's attempt to solve a murder that occurred at the location two years prior.
