God (Burns) appears to an unassuming supermarket manager (Denver) in the form of an old man, bidding him to spread his word and save the world. Facing a range of skeptics including religious theologians, legal authorities and his own wife, Jerry Landers eventually accepts his fate, despite being called crazy, and carries on with the mission given to him by God. Adapted from a novel by Avery Corman, this film was one of the highest grossing of 1977 and inspired two sequels. Nominated for one Academy Award.
