Based on a 1924 adventure novel of the same name involving three brothers who seek adventure and find it by leaving England and enlisting in the French Foreign Legion, following the left of a valuable jewel from a relation of theirs. The novel has been adapted to film several times in 1926, 1939, 1966 and 1982 as a BBC serial. The story is set before World War I and is an accurate and adventurous portrayal of life in the French Foreign Legion, the division of the French Army made up of foreign nationals who fight for France all over the world.

Set in Algeria.
