Known as the father of documentary, Flaherty mixed real life footage with staged events to capture portraits of people surviving in extreme environments in films such as "Nanook of the North" (1922), "Moana" (1926), and "Man of Aran" (1934), which he would have be shooting around the time this photograph was taken.
