Based on the 1945 novel by Robert Wilder, itself a fictionalized account of a real-life scandal involving torch singer Libby Holman and her husband, Zachary Smith Reynolds, heir to a tobacco fortune. A rich playboy impulsively marries a secretary at his father's office, unaware that his best friend is in love with her, with tragic results. Winner of a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Dorothy Malone, and nominated for two more, including Best Supporting Actor for Robert Stack.
