Based on 1920 French novel by Claude Anet, "Ariane, jeune fille russe" or "Ariane, Young Russian Girl." A middle-aged playboy falls for the daughter of a private investigator hired to tail him and catch him in a tryst with a different client. The novel was previous adapted in 1931 by Paul Czinner, who filmed versions in German, French, and English ("Ariane," "Ariane, jeune fille russe," and "The Loves of Arianne," respectively), which served as inspiration for Wilder's version.
