Based on the 1946 novel by Rumer Godden, who adapted it for the screen with Renoir. The film's crew included Satyajit Ray, who worked as an assistant director on the film after meeting Renoir. Ray's longtime cinematographer, Subrata Mitra, also worked on the film, and the two would come to international attention four years later with "Pather Panchali."
Set and shot on location in India.
