The series is based on "The Untouchables" (1957) by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley, Ness' memoir about working as a Prohibition agent. "The Untouchables" was considered a landmark crime series, earning protagonist Robert Stack an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series in 1960. Ness' memoir was published after his death and brought him fame beyond anything he could have imagined during his life.
