Based on Malot's 19th-century novel, "Sans famille" (1878), about an orphan boy who travels the back roads of France and Italy, playing music accompanied by various animals. Clowns, poachers, adventure, and Flateau would go on to beceom a professional musician. Malot's novel has seen several adaptations, including films in 1913, 1925, 1934, 1946, and 1964.
