Based on the 1945 Marty Holland novel of the same name, about a man accused of killing a waitress he had tried to seduce with his wife''s money. Holland wrote this original story for Fox, and rights for the novel were sold immediately in conjunction with the production of the film, which became the second of Otto Preminger's seven classic noirs made between 1944 and 1952.
