Donald (Williams) is fired from his upper management position in a nondescript company, and Sonny (Matthau), a Korean war veteran with a recently exploded gas station. The two meet and become friends at the unemployment office. Later at a diner, a masked gunman (Reed) attempts a robbery, fails and flees, but not before Sonny recognizes him. A series of events leaves Donald in a state of survivalism, leaving him on a collision course with his new partner.
Notable earlier directorial efforts by Ritchie include "Downhill Racer" (1969), "Prime Cut" (1972), and "The Candidate" (1972).
