Joseph A. Walker is best known as the writer of the 1972 play "The River Niger." The original Off-Broadway run received an Obie Award for Best Play, and Walker became the first African American writer to win a Tony Award, after the 1974 Broadway production won Best Play. Walker would go on the write the screenplay for the 1977 film adaptation, directed by Krishna Shah and starring Cicely Tyson and James Earl Jones.
