Vittoria (Monica Vitti) leaves her fiance (Francisco Rabal) and enters a new relationship with Piero, a young stock broker (Alain Delon) who is obsessed with material posessions and wealth, his shallow nature troubles Vittoria and leads to the demise of their relationship. Awarded the Jury Special Prize, and nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival.
