Based on the 1950 novel of the same name by Henry Morton Robinson, detailing the life of Stephen Fermoyle (Tom Tryon), a young American priest who must face personal moral dilemmas, the rise of Naziism, and bigotry while he rises into power within the church. The story is based in part on the career of Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman, archbishop of New York (1939–1967).
