Francois (Jean-Claude Brialy) returns to his home-town after a long absence to find his friend Serge (Gerard Blain) depressed, an alcoholic, and mourning the death of he and his wife Yvonne's stillborn child. Though at odds with provincial life, Francois wants to help his friend.
