Based on D.H. Lawrence's 1920 novel of the same name. While at a wedding in a small mining town in post World War I England, two sisters, Ursula (Jennie Linden) and Gudru Brangwen (Glenda Jackson) meet Gerald Crich (Oliver Reed), the brother of the bride, and his best friend Rupert Birkin (Alan Bates). They couple, and quickly Ursula and Birkin marry. The four go on a trip to the Alps where the complexities of their love stir up divergent tensions between the four of them. An examination of changes in sexual mores both in the time of the original novel as well as the late sixties when the film was released. Glenda Jackson won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the film was nominated for three others.
