A writer and his pregnant wife, mute from a car accident, move to a remote village while he works on a novel. Fantasy and reality, fact and fiction, begin to blend together as he transforms the villagers into characters in his story. In his 1969 review, Roger Ebert called The Creatures "a complex and nearly hypnotic study of the way fact is made into fiction. It seems to operate on many levels, but in fact it operates on only one, illustrating how fantasy, reality and style are simultaneously kept suspended in the mind of a creative writer."
