N.p. N.p., circa 1956. Vintage script for the 1956 Broadway musical play, including a 3-page "prop inventory" bound in at the rear.
A showcase for the talents of Sammy Davis Jr., "Mr. Wonderful" opened at the Broadway Theatre on March 22, 1956, and had a successful run of 383 performances before closing on February 23, 1957. Based on a story by Will Glickman and Joseph Stein about an entertainer, Charlie Welch (Davis), and his show business struggles, it was a vehicle for Davis, then largely a night club entertainer, to be introduced to the Broadway stage and a wider audience.
"Mr. Wonderful" starred Davis' father Sammy Sr and his uncle Will Mastin (who performed with Davis as the Will Mastin Trio) along with Jack Carter, Olga Davis, and others, featured songs from Bock, Holofcener and Weiss along side jazz and show tune standards. Davis' performance received rave reviews and helped to jettison him to the superstardom he would see by the end of the decade.
