Two days prior to the photograph being taken Ali returned to the boxing ring for the first time after being stripped of his boxing license in 1966 for refusing to be drafted into the armed forces, defeating Jerry Quarry by a technical knock out in the third round.
Paul Slade was a outstanding and prolific photographer on staff for Paris Match Magazine from 1953 to 1979. He covered Muhammad Ali from the early 1960's through the late 1970's.
