New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1963. First American Edition, originally published in Brazil by Livraria Jose Olympio Editora in 1956 as "Grande Sertao: Veredas." Scarce in and out of jacket.
One of the landmark works of South American literature, and perhaps the greatest Brazilian novel, written using a mix of both colloquial and archaic language, as well as neologisms, lending itself to comparisons to James Joyce's "Ulysses." The author's only novel, and one of only five books published in his lifetime.
Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Front board slightly bowed, with faint foxing to the page edges. Jacket is lightly toned to the spine and flap folds, with light silverfish damage to the extremities and rear panel.
