Based on Ernest Hemingway's 1929 semi-autobiographical novel, about an American soldier stationed in Italy whose romance with a Red Cross nurse becomes his only joy amidst the horrors of war. The second film adaptation of Hemingway's novel, and the final film produced by David O. Selznick.

Set in Italy and Switzerland, shot on location in Italy.
