Ben Brigade (Randoph Scott) is the tight-lipped bounty hunter taking wanted murderer Billy John (James Best) to Santa Cruz for hanging. After an encounter with two outlaws (Pernell Roberts and James Coburn) and hostile Indians at a stagecoach way station they continue their journey accompanied by the newly widowed station master's wife (Karen Steele) and the outlaws for protection. In pursuit is Billy John's brother Frank (Lee Van Cleef) who we find out years earlier hung Brigade's wife in retribution for arresting him for murder. James Coburn's film debut.

Shot on location in California.
