Marshal Tate (Rory Calhoun) finds himself caught in a conflict between a bigoted town, led by the racist and cowardly Cavalryman Cpt. George (Lloyd Bridges) and Cheyenne out for revenge when one of Cpt. George's men kill Chief Yellow Wolf (Frank DeKova).

Featuring Joanne Gilbert as Pretty Willow, Chief Yellow Wolf's daughter and Tate's love interest and Gloria Grahame as Amy Porter, a widow in love with Tate.

Set in the Dakotas, shot on location in California.
