Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1949. Vintage studio still photograph of Jennifer Jones and Van Heflin from the 1949 film. Mimeo snipe and "Silver Screen Archives" stamp on the verso.

Based on Gustave Flaubert's 1856 novel and the fourth adaptation for the screen.

Vincente Minnelli dodged the Hays Code in his remarkable film version by adding a prologue and epilogue in which James Mason plays Flaubert, defending his inflammatory novel before a French jury, assuring them that the story is strictly a work of fiction. Fortunately for Joseph Breen, Madame Bovary commits suicide at the end, and justice for her faithlessness is served.

Nominated for an Academy Award.

8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus with some creasing in margins.
