Charles Laughton's only directorial credit, with tremendous performances throughout, led by a never-better Robert Mitchum and a resurgent Lillian Gish. Reviled upon its release, but today considered one of the classic noir films of the 1950s.
Selected for the National Film Registry in 1992.
